Summary:

The Campaign Director is a senior member of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc’s (POKC) Development Department, reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO). In partnership with the CPO, the Campaign Director is responsible for the administration and achievement of the contributed revenue goals for the POKC’s comprehensive fundraising campaign.

 

The Campaign Director is the principal administrator for the campaign. Together with the CPO, the Campaign Director will help develop and oversee the implementation of the strategy for the campaign, including extensive work with the Campaign Committee, POKC staff and board leadership, outside consultants, and staff colleagues.

The POKC Development team, currently 28 members, is anticipated to grow as POKC advances with the campaign. The Campaign Director will be responsible for recruiting and managing future new positions specifically for campaign work.

 

The success of the campaign is dependent upon widespread participation from the POKC’s donor family. To this end, the Campaign Director will work closely with staff colleagues who lead the POKC’s major gifts, annual fund, stewardship, communications, and development services programs.

 

During the initial quiet phase of the campaign, the Campaign Director will be primarily responsible for developing strategies for principal and major gift prospects, producing proposals, and preparing the cultivation and solicitation teams in their respective efforts.

 

As the campaign advances toward a public phase, the Campaign Director will provide leadership guidance on efforts to prepare and roll-out this phase of the campaign. This work will require coordination with other members of the Development team, most importantly the frontline fundraisers.

 

The Campaign Director is also a frontline fundraiser and will be expected to manage a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects who are identified as strong prospects for campaign support.

 

The successful candidate is an experienced fundraising professional who has worked in most—if not all—aspects of a high-performing philanthropy operation. The candidate will be a strategic and expansive thinker, collaborative, optimistic, and committed to achieving ambitious fundraising goals for an ambitious organization. The candidate will also be committed to fostering an organization-wide culture of philanthropy that involves all constituencies ranging from staff to volunteers, and from musicians to patrons.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead strategic partner for the Chief Philanthropy Officer, President and CEO, Executive Director, Campaign Committee and Board leadership for the planning and execution of the comprehensive fundraising campaign.
  • Direct and oversee the implementation of all aspects of the campaign across the Development department including the execution of fundraising plans, timetables, prospect pipelines, and achievement of clearly defined goals.
  • Drive executive leadership and campaign volunteer leadership involvement by creating cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for lead prospects; preparing proposals and collateral material; and providing training and briefings to support their efforts.
  • Managing a personal portfolio of 25 to 40 principal and major gift donors and prospects.
  • Identify campaign naming opportunities and develop custom price proposals as needed.
  • Create strategies and oversee execution for campaign-related announcements and gift celebration/naming events in collaboration with communications and marketing staff as required.
  • In partnership with the CPO, oversee and manage all committees related to the campaign, including volunteer leadership recruitment.
  • Manage, alongside the CPO, all consultant relationships connected to the campaign.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Development department to achieve campaign goals:
    • Work with frontline fundraisers in principal, major, and planned giving roles to support successful messaging, strategy, proposals, and gift agreement letters with prospects.
    • Collaborate across the Development department to create messaging strategy for campaign print and electronic collateral materials, including the case statement and board presentations, and ensure timely execution on development of materials.
    • Drive the strategy for the Development leadership and stewardship teams on stewardship efforts related to the campaign.
    • In collaboration with research colleagues, establish solicitation priorities, oversee prospect lists, and research needs, set giving targets, and develop and execute targeted cultivation plans and solicitation strategies for a range of prospects.
    • Collaborate with the Development Services team to develop analytics for timely and accurate campaign reports. Ensure timely and accurate recording of gift agreements and acknowledgments and timely delivery of pledge reminders for campaign contributions.
  • Attend and present on campaign progress at board and committee meetings, as assigned.
  • Serve as a senior member of the Development Department, contributing to overall department planning as relates to the Campaign.
  • Perform additional duties as required to achieve the philanthropic goals of the POKC.

 

Professional Experience and Traits:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in fundraising, preferably with a major cultural organization, including experience working on a comprehensive fundraising campaign.
  • Demonstrable success in cultivating and soliciting principal gift prospects capable of gifts at seven-figure and above levels.
  • Track record of management success working on a large, comprehensive fundraising campaign in a sophisticated and complex environment.
  • Strong leadership presence based on prior professional experience and knowledge of fundraising and campaigns, with a style and personality that resonates positively with staff, donors, and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and diplomatic abilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Outstanding communication skills—written, verbal, and presentational.
  • Strong management and organizational skills with the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple assignments and priorities.
  • A passion for and interest in classical music and/or the performing arts is strongly desired, as is an appreciation for the importance of the arts to civic life.
  • Proficient in MS Office and donor database software (Tessitura preferred).
  • Personal commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
  • Willing and available to attend concerts and events regularly on nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel, as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
