Porter Supervisor

Department: Operations - Campus Experience
Reports to: Event Services Manager
Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Porter Supervisor serves as an integral part of the daily operations and functions of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Merriam Theater, and the Academy of Music. The Porter Supervisor is responsible for informing and advancing the goals and plans developed by the Porter Manager, and managing the porter staff collaboratively and independently, as needed. The Porter Supervisor is expected to lead, but also carry out the duties and functions of the Porters, who provide event support by setting up all equipment and furniture in the front-of-house spaces and are responsible for moving equipment, furniture, boxes and miscellaneous articles of various types within the buildings and throughout the campus.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct porter staff and supervise their work
  • Liaise with clients and partners to establish day-of workflow and prioritization of work
  • Oversee handling of materials and inventory in collaboration with Porter Manager
  • In absence of Porter Manager, serve as primary point of contact for Porter-related discussions and decision-making
  • Conduct daily facility walk-through to ensure all equipment is in its appropriate place and all furniture is set according to the floor-plan
  • Maintain awareness of building schedules
  • Report any unsafe equipment issues or equipment reaching its life expectancy
  • Set and strike all front-of-house event setups in the public spaces, special event spaces, and meeting rooms according to floor-plans and request forms. These setups include tables, linens, chairs, poster cases, coat racks, stanchions, stages, etc.
  • Drop and pickup Kimmel Center, Inc. owned equipment for catering department events
  • Set, remove, and store building furniture when needed
  • Move and relocate office furniture, boxes, public area furniture, and other equipment
  • Inspect, clean, care for, and, in some cases, assemble or repair furniture or other equipment
  • Responsible for appearance and cleanliness of equipment, including laundering linens and chair covers
  • Trash/recycle old printed materials and equipment
  • Receive and sign for front of house equipment and deliveries
  • Collaborate with Production and I.A.T.S.E. stage hands regarding event setups and use of shared space and equipment
  • Transport client equipment and paraphernalia within the building(s)
  • Transport and stock marketing materials including brochures, programs, and inserts
  • Deliver large or bulk mail items from administrative offices to other buildings in the campus
  • Hang large posters (3 sheets) in exterior cases using a ladder
  • Attend required employee staff development meetings/programs/trainings
  • Lead weekly Event Services Review meeting
  • Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma
  • Three (3) years of experience in event services or event set-ups for a performing arts venue or similar facility.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong customer service orientation, and the ability to work with a diverse clientele
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Office environment.
  • Available to work a varied schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to perform light physical tasks exerting up to 60lbs of force on a frequent basis and up to 150lbs on an occasional basis
  • Ability to perform such activities as grasping, lifting, reaching, crouching, walking, climbing, sitting and carrying repetitively and for long periods of time
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, mornings, and nights
  • Must wear closed-toe shoes, Kimmel issued uniform, belted pants, and proper Kimmel issued identification
