Celebrate Black History Month at the Kimmel Center! February programming includes legendary dance, free celebrations, educational classes, and more!
· Alvin Ailey returns for a weekend of inspirational performances with new works and long-standing favorites, like legendary work Revelations (February 3-4, 2017)
· Balé Folclórico da Bahía, Brazil’s premier 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers, bring “Bahian” folkloric dances of African origin, including capoeira, samba, and Carnival celebrations (February 17, 2017)
· Attend a FREE Community Capoeira dance lesson led by Philadelphia-based dance company Project Capoeira. Learn the rich history of this dance form, born out of the struggle for freedom dating back to the 16th century. (February 7, 2017)
· The entire community is invited to Carnival at The Kimmel Center, a free dance party that will parade down Broad Street to the Merriam Theater in time for the 7:30 performance of Balé Folclórico da Bahía (February 17, 2017)
· PHILADANCO pays tribute to jazz icons, the Music of Prince, Earth Wind and Fire, and choreography by Tally Beatty in a fusion of modern and jazz dance. This matinee, followed by a Q&A session) is open to all school groups, teachers and chaperones.
· Join Sittin’ In: Live Sessions for free music, the history of the “jam session” and the pivotal role it has played in the African American artistic experience. (February 15, 2017)
· Our free PNC Grow Up Great programs brings Black History to the littlest music lovers, with the history of the traditional negro spirituals, songs used to uplift and empower enslaved people. (February 18, 2017)
· Ongoing free performing arts classes on the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz Scat singing are offered to students in grades 5-12.
