It’s National Book Lovers Day!

To celebrate, we’ve compiled a list of select books associated with performers and events from our 2017-18 season. Happy reading!

Broadway Bookstand Best Bets:

  • The Phantom of the Opera

Gaston Leroux not only wrote a book that inspired the play The Phantom of the Opera but also is known for writing horror stories such as Rouilable and The Haunted Chair. Leroux is perfect for your post-Halloween reading list!

  • The Color Purple

You may know that Alice Walker wrote this poignant classic in 1982. Did you know that Walker is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist? How cool is that?! #MustRead

  • Les Misérables

Victor Hugo, while wildly known for his work in writing the novel Les Misérables, also wrote The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Both these books make our #classics list.

  • Something Rotten!

Renowned playwright William Shakespeare, often referred to as “The Bard”, is a character in this humorous play. The two main characters, Nigel and Nick, are playwrights during the European Renaissance era where Shakespeare is their biggest rival. Will this be a comedy or a tragedy? Whatever the outcome, you can’t go wrong with Shakespeare. Dust off those high school lit books and get to reading!

  • Finding Neverland

This show focuses on J.M. Barrie, the playwright behind the children’s tale Peter Pan and Wendy. Pick up this tale and fly back to childhood.  #IWontGrowUp

Political Picks:

  • Hillary Clinton Live

We all know Hillary Clinton as a politician, but she’s a prolific writer as well. Clinton makes a stop to the Kimmel Center to promote her new book, What Happened. If you can’t make the show, find out What Happened from your couch with this hardcover.

  • Joe Biden: American Promise Tour

Former Vice President Joe Biden makes a stop at the Kimmel Center to promote his book, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose. Insider tip? If you’re coming to this event, wear a rosary; it’s Biden’s good luck charm.

Comedic Collections:

  • Nick Offerman: Full Bush

You may know him as Ron Swanson on Parks and Rec, but did you know Nick Offerman is also an author?  He makes his way to the Merriam Theater for his Full Bush comedy tour inspired by his book, Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop

  • Mr. Popper’s Penguins

This treasured children’s tale, written by Richard Atwater, comes to life onstage in February. Visit this classic story on a snowy day!
