Two founding members of People of Earth, percussionists Gabriel Globus-Hoenich and Victor Pablo, have deep Philly roots. Gabriel studied at The Curtis Institute of music from 2004-2008 and then lived in Philly for four more years where he immersed himself in the historic jazz scene, performing at Chris' Jazz Cafe, Ortliebs and many other venues, while continuing to play classical percussion and contemporary chamber music in Philadelphia and around the country. Victor arrived in 2009 and pursued both a Bachelors and Masters Degree at Temple University studying with master pedagogue and legendary percussionist Alan Abel. Both Gabe and Vic cut their teeth doing a variety of gigs around Philly and collaborating with master musicians across a wide spectrum of genres. Both have performed many times at the Kimmel with different ensembles and are thrilled to be back for this "homecoming" event with their band People of Earth.
Marck “Flaco” Best has been teaching popular forms of cultural social dance since 1997, with a particular focus on those rhythms that allow him to embrace his Cuban heritage. He is a tenured instructor with the Mt. Airy Learning Tree. After being trained by Monsieur Pierre Dulaine in his method, Flaco became one of the original teaching artists for Dancing Classrooms Philly, sister to the program in New York City used in the film Mad Hot Ballroom. Maestro Flaco continues to teach, perform, and choreograph, while conducting residencies in our schools to help ensure that future generations of dancers get the exposure, inspiration, and examples they need to empower them to make the choice to become professional artists.
