Overview

Born in Dallas, raised by a tight-knit, church-going family filled with musical talent, vocalist, composer and bandleader Jazzmeia Horn has blazed a trail through the jazz world, from her wins in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition and Thelonius Monk Institute International Jazz Competition to a spate of live performances and recordings greeted with rave reviews, multiple Grammy Award nominations and the 51st Annual NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album (2020). Jazz icons like Wynton Marsalis and Jon Hendricks sing her praises, and Al Jarreau says Jazzmeia Horn is “not only a vocalist, but a musician with wisdom beyond her years.”

Presented as part of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and Jazz Philadelphia Living Legacy Jazz Awards and Jazz Summit, this concert will include a performance with this year’s Living Legacy Jazz Award winner Roger Humphries. The Living Legacy Jazz Award is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) and honors living jazz masters from the Mid-Atlantic region who have achieved distinction in jazz performance and education.

After the concert, hear more great jazz with the Jazz Philadelphia Homecoming Jam in the Kimmel Center Plaza featuring an intergenerational ensemble of Philly’s finest musicians.

The program will include a performance with Living Legacy Jazz Award winner Roger Humphries (2022). The Living Legacy Jazz Award is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF) and honors living jazz masters from the Mid-Atlantic region who have achieved distinction in jazz performance and education.

“Jazzmeia is a performer for whom every word, gesture, and ornament becomes an expression of her total conviction and she completely comes alive in the moment"
London Jazz News

“Without a doubt among the jazz world’s most exciting young vocalists…her sound is explosive and bright and rich, catnip for audiences looking for boldness that’s still traditional.”
Billboard

“Horn emerges as a fully realized stylist and a first-rate scatter whose vivacity, imagination, gutsiness and sociopolitical savvy echo the likes of Carter and Abbey Lincoln. Simply put, she is as exciting a discovery as Cécile McLorin Salvant or Gregory Porter.” -JazzTimes

"Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present." - The New York Times
