Overview

Yannick Nézet-Séguin Conductor
Daniel Matsukawa Bassoon

Berio Four Original Versions of Luigi Boccherini’s The Night Retreat of Madrid
Assad Bassoon Concerto (world premiere—Philadelphia Orchestra commission)
Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 1 (Thursday)
Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 (Friday and Saturday)

Fan’s choice: Pick your performance, pick your Rachmaninoff symphony! Rachmaninoff’s dark, brooding First Symphony swirls with drama and mystery, the perfect accompaniment to an autumn night, as the leaves drift along the pavement. His Second Symphony is lushly textured, warm, and melodious.

The concert begins with artists speaking across two centuries, with 20th-century composer Luciano Berio’s take on a gem by Baroque master Luigi Boccherini, beautifully capturing the sounds of Madrid at night.

The heart of this brilliantly hued program is the world premiere of a new concerto created for Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Bassoon Daniel Matsukawa by Clarice Assad, a Brazilian-American composer hailed for her evocative colors, rich textures, and stylistic range.

The Clarice Assad Concerto was commissioned with the generous support of Dr. Richard M. Klein for The Philadelphia Orchestra and Daniel Matsukawa.

Lead support for the Rachmaninoff 150 Celebration is provided by Tatiana Copeland. Mrs. Copeland’s mother was the niece of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Tatiana Copeland was named after the composer’s daughter, Tatiana Sergeyevna Rachmaninoff.
