KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS

THE ONE-OF-A-KIND ARNETTA JOHNSON,

 “THAT TRUMPET CHIC,”

MARCH 19, 2022

New Jersey native among NPR’s “20 Artists to Watch”

“...the sound she creates is very much her own. It is, at times, aggressive.

It’s funk. It’s hip-hop. It’s pop. It’s R&B. And it is, of course, jazz.”

- PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (January 13, 2022) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus presents the creator of the “Netta Bop” sound, Arnetta Johnson, for a powerful performancein the Campus’ Perelman Theater on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 8:00 p.m. The New Jersey native introduces both young musical audiences and jazz aficionados to an all-new musical experience.

Having been dubbed “that trumpet chic,” Arnetta Johnson is the music she plays. She is undisputedly leaving her stamp on the jazz world and earning her place in the playlists of her colleagues and peers. The expansion of her “disruptive jazz” style and her “Netta Bop” sound represents the depth of her passion. Additionally, she is the bandleader of her group, Arnetta Johnson and SUNNY(Sounds Uplifting Nobility through Notes and Youth) and strives to stand jazz on its head and to inspire others.

Deeply committed to the health and safety of guests, artists, and staff and proudly certified by GBAC, the gold standard for infection prevention programs, the Kimmel Cultural Campus is requiring masks to be worn at all times for guests attending on-Campus events, as well as proof of vaccination for those over 5. Guests under 5 will be required to show a negative PCR test result or negative rapid test. Additional details below.

“We are thrilled to present rising star Arnetta Johnson for this one-night-only event,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “From R&B to hip-hop to jazz, she displays a wondrous sound, and rare versatility and panache in her captivating performances.”

Johnson attended the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Camden, New Jersey, and then Berklee College of Music. She has received national medals from the NAACP ACT-SO Competition, has won over 20 Best Soloist awards from various high school jazz festivals, and was recognized as the Best Overall Soloist at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Fest. NPR deemed her one of its “20 Artists to Watch”. In 2018, Johnson performed with Beyoncé at the Super Bowl and was a featured trumpeter on her On the Run II Tour and on the Carters' Grammy®-winning album Everything Is Love.

Nasir Dickerson, Jamal Dickerson, and Hassan Sabree were all initial catalysts that helped form Johnson’s passion for the trumpet. These artists introduced her to a new realm of musical discovery and the art of improvision. She is currently being mentored by Grammy® Award-winning artist Jill Scott and the dynamic saxophonist Tia Fuller. Her debut album If You Hear A Trumpet, It’s Me was released in June of 2019.

Whether it’s rocking a television show like Black Girls Rock, a concert gig, or an international performance, her artistry is always front and center.

Other performances in the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ 21-22 Jazz Series include Laurin Talese (February 19, 2022, Perelman Theater), Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (March 24, 2022, Academy of Music), Diana Krall (April 8, 2022, Academy of Music), Jazz in the Key of Ellison (April 14, 2022, Verizon Hall), Dianne Reeves (April 21, 2022, Merriam Theater), and Bria Skonberg (June 12, 2022, Perelman Theater).
