FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (October 14, 2021) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus presents internationally renowned jazz group Django Festival All-Stars in the Kimmel Cultural Campus’Perelman Theater on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at 8:00 p.m. Django Festival All-Stars bring the music of the legendary Gypsy Jazz Guitarist Django Reinhardt fully into the 21st century with a unique, high-energy performance that pays tribute to one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

Renowned in their own right, the band’s talented roster features Samson Schmitt, son of guitarist/violinist Dorado Schmitt; virtuoso violinist Pierre Blanchard; and accordionist extraordinaire Ludovic Beier. They are joined by DouDou Cuillerier on rhythm guitar and vocals, with Antonio Licusati on Acoustic Bass. Together, this brilliantly cohesive group of star musicians has taken the world by storm, performing at top concert halls and festivals throughout the last 20 years.

“Curating a jazz series in a city as creative, diverse, and multifaceted as Philadelphia means presenting artists at all stages of their careers and with varied sounds and styles,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and soon-to-be president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “We are delighted to add the legendary Django Festival All-Stars to our extraordinary jazz season and look forward to experiencing their signature sound.”

Reinhardt’s driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz”, and it continues to grow in popularity throughout the world in great part due to the success of the Django Festival All-Stars, who honor the traditions of this “gypsy jazz” while adding their own interpretations, arrangements, and original compositions with stunning virtuosity.

The music speaks of Paris in the 20s and 30s when “gitane” music filled the air. It harkens back to the 30s and 40s in Europe where Django Reinhardt was “king” and teamed with the top jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli to create musical history. The Django Festival All-Stars bring this music to today, showcasing an intoxicating combination of some known standards and original music.

Other performances in the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ 21-22 Jazz Series include The Hot Sardines: Holiday Stomp (December 2, 2021, Perelman Theater), Bria Skonberg (January 13, 2022, Perelman Theater), Dianne Reeves (January 20, 2022, Merriam Theater), Laurin Talese (February 19, 2022, Perelman Theater), Arnetta Johnson (March 19, 2022, Perelman Theater), Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (March 24, 2022, Academy of Music), and Jazz in the Key of Ellison (April 14, 2022, Verizon Hall).
