KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS

EMMY® AND PEABODY AWARD-WINNING COMEDIAN HANNAH

GADSBY IN BODY OF WORK

MAY 7, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (March 17, 2022) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus, in association with AEG Presents, welcomes back world class, award-winning funny person, Hannah Gadsby, to the Merriam Theater on the Kimmel Cultural Campuson Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. Gadsby will be performing her brand-new live show Body Of Work.

Hannah Gadsby, an Australian comedian and writer who captured the world’s attention with her groundbreaking standup shows Nanette and Douglas, returns with her highly anticipated new show Body Of Work. The attention she garnered led to an Off-Broadway run and multiple Netflix Original Comedy Specials.

“Hannah Gadsby uses her humor to address significant and relevant cultural issues, bringing a special brand of laughter to the stage as part of our Spring 2022 comedian lineup,” said Frances Egler, senior director of programming and presentations on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. “Her performance embodies our ideal as an institution and the fundamental belief that art gives voice to thoughts and ideas, connecting populations and allowing us to see ourselves as agents for change.”

Before taking up comedy, Gadsby sought a degree in Art History and Curatorship from Australian National University. She began to present comedy art tours in conjunction with the National Gallery of Victoria, and she co-starred on the Australian ABC television network show Adam Hills Tonight. She wrote and presented a three-part series on ABC TV, Hannah Gadsby’s OZ (March 2014), and she was featured as Hannah in the second, third, and fourth seasons of fellow comedian, Josh Thomas’s series Please Like Me.

Gadsby has hosted three art documentaries, inspired by comedy art lectures she created to accompany collections at major galleries. She performed the stand-up show Nanette to sold out houses across Australia and in London, Edinburgh, New York, and Los Angeles before launching on Netflix. The New York Times called it “the most-talked-about, written-about, shared-about comedy act in years.” The one-woman show was meant to serve as a farewell to comedy, but she rethought her departure from the stage, telling Jimmy Fallon, “If I quit, I’m an idiot now. If the show had gone as badly as I planned, it would have worked, but now I’m left with a choice: I’ll either be an idiot or a hypocrite. I’ll be a hypocrite.”

Gadsby received the Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and a Peabody Award for her special Nanette. In 2019, she toured internationally with her show Douglas and the recorded special was released on Netflix in 2020.
