JAZZ LEGENDS WYNTON MARSALIS & CHICK COREA TO HONOR THELONIOUS MONK ON THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS APRIL 8, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 2018) –– Twenty two-time Grammy® Award- winning jazz pianist Chick Corea joins legendary musician Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. in the Academy of Music to perform the music of master pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. During this return engagement, the band will perform Corea’s favorite seminal pieces by Monk, often referred to as the high priest of modern music, which have been rearranged and recrafted into incredible new versions by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s talented arrangers.

“We are celebrating the 100th birthday of the great, jazz innovator Thelonious Monk, so the timing is perfect for the return of The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis to the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.  “Joined by the incomparable Chick Corea this year, the band will take audiences on a journey through the mesmerizing sounds of this renowned musician.”

From a young age, Wynton Marsalis had an inclination towards making music. Shortly after enrolling at Juilliard in 1979, Marsalis signed with Columbia Records and toured for 15 years. In 1987, he founded Jazz at Lincoln Center and currently serves as its Managing and Artistic director. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is made up of 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music today.

Chick Corea’s more than 50 year career has kept him at the forefront of jazz, both as a renowned pianist forging new ground with his acoustic jazz bands and as an innovative electric keyboardist. His extensive discography boasts numerous albums, as well as 63 Grammy Award nominations – making him the fourth most nominated artist in Grammy history. Corea’s eclectic sounds range from straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber music, and much more.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Deepak Chopra (March 15, 2018, Merriam Theater), Regina Carter: Simple Ella (March 24, 2018, Perelman Theater), On Your Feet! (April 10-15, Academy of Music), Jazz Residency Artist Luke Carlos O’Reilly (May 3, 2018, SEI Innovation Studio), and Brandi Carlile (May 18, 2018, Merriam Theater).
