THE JAZZ ORCHESTRA OF PHILADELPHIA EMBARKS ON A BREATHTAKING EXPLORATION OF SPACE ACCOMPANIED BY A WORLD PREMIERE REIMAGINED JAZZ ARRANGEMENT OF GUSTAV HOLST’S THE PLANETS DURING THE KIMMEL CENTER’S PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS JUNE 8, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 30, 2018) – The Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia will perform a world premiere reimagined jazz arrangement of Gustav Holst’s The Planets conducted by Terell Stafford as part of the Kimmel Center’s 2018 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA).  After the Houston Symphony’s wildly popular UK tour that The Guardian called “an experience that is genuinely out of this world,” the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia will perform alongside the Duncan Copp film, The Planets: An HD Odyssey. It features spectacular images of the Solar System from NASA that will be projected on a large screen in Verizon Hall, Friday, June 8, 2018 at 8 p.m. The soundtrack was arranged by Joseph Block, a former student of the Kimmel Center’s own Creative Music Program (Venus); Todd Bashore (Mars & Mercury); Jack Saint Clair (Jupiter); Mark Allen (Saturn & Uranus); and Nick Lombardelli (Neptune).

“The Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia is one of our most beloved partnerships, and we are thrilled that they are performing a world premiere symphony during PIFA 2018,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We can’t wait to see the gorgeous planets on a large screen in Verizon Hall and hear this beautiful new arrangement of Gustav Holst’s The Planets.”

Thanks to NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratories, The Planets: An HD Odyssey features incredible images from space showing audiences up close and extraordinary views of our Solar System.  Performed by a live Jazz Orchestra for the first time, experience the stunning sights of Mars, Mercury, Saturn, and more.

A special opening act for this performance will be The Jazz Ambassadors Jazztet of The United States Army Field Band. It is composed of members of the Jazz Ambassadors of The United States Army Field Band, the Army’s premier touring jazz orchestra. It was developed in the legendary style of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Cristal Palace (June 1-10, 2018, banks of the Schuylkill River), Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music Part I (June 2, 2018, Merriam Theater), Doggie Hamlet (June 3-4, 2018, Belmont Plateau), Tape Riot (June 5-8, 2018, city locations revealed to ticket buyers), Taylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music Part II (June 9, 2018, Merriam Theater), and Disney’s Aladdin (June 13-July 1, 2018, Academy of Music).
