FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, November 27, 2017) –– The Afro-Cuban All Stars, led by Juan de Marcos, will bring the sounds of Cuba to the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus’ Merriam Theater on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. Featuring an array of musical genres, the Afro-Cuban All Stars will take audiences on a journey through Cuba’s rich musical history.
“Over the last 20 years, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have performed alongside world-renowned musicians to create and preserve the wonderful history of Cuban music,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Here on the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus, it is our mission to continue to grow our jazz offerings, reaching broad and diverse Philadelphia audiences with culturally-rich experiences like this.”
From their inception, the Afro-Cuban All Stars (ACAS) have been indispensable to the rising worldwide popularity of Afro-Cuban music. A unique orchestra devoted to promoting the complete story of Cuban music, the ACAS musical stylings incorporate the full spectrum of Latin dance music and embrace several generations of musical styles including salsa, mambo, cha cha, bolero, and rumba. Beginning in the 1990s as the ensemble Sierra Maestra, headed by Juan de Marcos, the group received tons of international exposure, including several successful European Tours. In 1997, following years of touring and album success, de Marcos and a select group of talented musicians began touring under the nameAfro-Cuban All Stars.
After years of tremendous success, including four Grammy® nominations, several documentaries and films of which they were the subjects, and the recipients of many other distinctions, the ACAS have distinguished themselves as the best-known and successful Cuban Orchestra behind Los Van Van and Irakere. Over time, the ACAS have opened their doors to a new generation as they incorporated young musicians into the band. Many of the multi-generational band members, ranging in age from 13 to 81, have become international superstars, including performers Ruben Gonzalez, Guillermo Rubalcava, and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal.
Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Laurin Talese (February 10, 2018, Perelman Theater); Marsalis & Kunz, A Duet of Saxophone & Organ (February 16, 2018, Verizon Hall); Regina Carter: Simply Ella (March 24, 2018, Perelman Theater); and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra w/ Wynton Marsalis & Chick Corea (April 8, 2018, Academy of Music).
