FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 7, 2022) –– The Kimmel Cultural Campus presents a FREE Nightlife at the Kimmel event on Friday, May 18, 2022, at 8:00 p.m., Apartnered presentation with Jazz Philadelphia’s Gerald Veasley, the event features Luke Carlos O’Reilly and the Philly Jazz Divas. Part of its new, free programming added to its already full roster of more than two thousand events, the Kimmel Cultural Campus is proudly working with MALPICA & AFROTAINO and Jazz Philadelphia to spotlight the best artists the region has to offer. This new series offers an attractive pre- and post-show addition for ticket buyers and passersby, bringing to life the iconic glass domed Plaza with local talent.

 

“Audiences have told us they want to come early and stay after performances to experience even more art with us.” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “We are excited to introduce our audiences to this week’s Plaza performers, and we extend a very special welcome to local award-winning pianist Luke Carlos O’Reilly, one of Kimmel's talented teaching artists and a Kimmel Jazz Residency alum.”  

 

Jazz Philadelphia influences the city’s rich jazz legacy and vibrant musical assets to build a strong, cohesive, forward-looking community. They connect the people and musicians in the Philadelphia region who create, support, and present jazz to build a healthy, sustainable jazz community that is recognized around the world. Their goals are achieved in a distinctly “Philadelphia” way—with a diverse coalition marked by passion, grit, collaboration, authenticity, and creativity.

 

 

Pianist and Music Director, Luke Carlos O’Reilly, showcases a multi-generational roster of favorite Philadelphia jazz vocalists, including:

Sherry Wilson Butler

Butler’s musical foundation and current professional career enlists her credits as a performing & recording artist/entertainer, A & R pro, vocal teacher & coach, music educator, lyricist, educational administrator, actress, commercial voice-over talent, and short story writer. Her career spans over 30 years in the music industry, and 20 years in education. She has performed and recorded for world-renowned recording, radio, & television studios. Her travels include the United States, East-West Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. Sherry’s work is exemplified in a diverse repertoire of upbeat contemporary jazz, R&B, pop, and gospel selections. A favorite on the Jazz, and R&B Festival circuit, Butler has performed at the Cape May, West Oak Lane, Rehoboth Beach, Anguilla, West Indies Jazz festivals-numerous festivals worldwide. Butler’s vocal competitions-include Finalist for the Savannah International “Vocal Sing” and Washington, DC’s “Jazz Network.”

 

Hailey Brinnel

Hailey Brinnel is a trombonist, vocalist, and educator based in Philadelphia.  She has shared the stage with artists including Sherrie Maricle & The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, Ingrid Jensen, Anat Cohen, Tony Glausi, and Charles Neville.  She is also an active educator at The University of the Arts, The Kimmel Center, as well as clinic and K-12 settings in the greater Philadelphia area.  Brinnel is an Outside in Music, B.A.C. Musical Instruments artist, and was a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

 

Nathan Pence

Nathan Pence is a bassist, arranger, composer and musical director based out of Philadelphia. After graduating from Temple University with a Masters in Music, he is now the musical director for Brian Owens and the Deacons of Soul, as well as the bassist for the Terell Stafford Quintet. Nathan also uses his composition and arranging abilities to score for film and write strings for all genres of music.

 

Laurin Talese

After studying classical and jazz at the University of Arts in Philadelphia, Talese received her bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance. On top of her studies, Talese is a natural-born talent who is not just a singer who has performed across the globe, but also a passionate songwriter. She serves on the board of Jazz Philadelphia, as well as the Recording Academy’s Philadelphia chapter, where she was recently appointed Vice President.

 

Her debut album, Gorgeous Chaos, was released in March 2016 and was met with critical acclaim, listed among the top 10 jazz albums in the Chicago Tribune. The album features a stellar lineup of musicians and was produced by and features in-demand music directors/producers Adam Blackstone and the Grammy® Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owen Jr., who she then partnered with to create her album An Invitation. The list of international renowned venues in which she has performed includes the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the Apollo Theater in New York, and the Academy of Music on the Kimmel Cultural Campus.

 

In 2019, Talese represented the United States as a cultural ambassador with American Music Abroad, following in the footsteps of former Ambassadors Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and Dave Brubeck. American Music Abroad is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and implemented by the Association of American Voices.

  • Monday, May 30 – A partnered presentation with MALPICA & AFROTAINO, this evening features Flaco Navaja & the Razor Blades.

We will always put the safety of our guests, artists, and staff first, and we have worked closely with partners, producers, artists, guests and other performing arts centers around the nation to develop the most comprehensive plan to safely reopen our doors. We are committing to a healthy and clean environment with increased disinfection, enhanced ventilation, and will enforce recommended health authority guidelines, including masks and proof of vaccination. 

 

Masks are required to be worn at all times when on the Kimmel Cultural Campus, except when actively consuming food or beverage in designated locations. Prolonged periods of mask removal are not permitted. 

 

All attendees for public events must show proof of full vaccination at the time of entry, with valid photo ID and copy of vaccination card (physical or photo). Children under 5 are no longer required to show a negative PCR test or negative rapid result when accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult.
