FORMER KIMMEL CENTER THEATER RESIDENT AND UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS ALUM MARTHA STUCKEY PRESENTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF HER NEW SHOW DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE ON THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS APRIL 12-14, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 2018) – Former Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts theater resident and University of the Arts alum Martha Stuckey returns to the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus to premiere her new show Due To The Sensitive Nature at the SEI Innovation Studio, April 12-14, 2018. Created during her residency in June of last year, the performance will showcase Stuckey’s haunting and sometimes hostile voice as she sings folk melodies cut with ’80s pop synth. She’ll be singing alongside the unearthly sounds of the steel guitar, performed by original collaborator Isaac Stanford. Stuckey recounts moments of “pleasurable pain” and “painful pleasure” with hilarity, vulnerability, and secret sharing as she takes audiences on a musical and moving journey.
“We are extremely proud of the Kimmel Center’s Theater Residency program which provides a creative environment for emerging artists to pursue their creation and development of original works,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “It is such a pleasure to spotlight artists like Martha Stuckey, whose program promises to reveal the deepest, and at times darkest, moments of the human spirit through her powerful music and performance.”
Martha Stuckey is an artist based in Philadelphia, PA. She leads the band Red 40 & The Last Groovement. In 2015, Ars Nova Theater selected the band to perform in ANTFest. In 2016, Red 40 released their album She's Keen To Feed. Stuckey devises and performs with Pig Iron Theater Company (Pay Up, 99 Breakups, I Promised Myself to Live Faster [Workshop], Period of Animate Existence), Team Sunshine (The Sincerity Project, Society of Civil Discourse), Swim Pony (The End), Cynthia Hopkins (Requiem for Five Shows), Lightning Rod Special (Hackles), Almanac (Nightfall), and The Bearded Ladies (Mommy Queerest, Get Pegged). She holds an MFA in Devised Performance from the Pig Iron School and UArts.
