FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 22, 2017) –– The Cyrus Chestnut Trio, led by acclaimed pianist Cyrus Chestnut, comes to the SEI Innovation Studio on April 13, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. for a blues-infused jazz performance. Earning a reputation for their skillful versatility and ability to flawlessly incorporate gospel into their club performances, the Cyrus Chestnut Trio promises a performance that appeals to both aficionados and fans alike. Joined by bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Neal Smith, Chestnut uses the trio format to continually refine the typical jazz rhythm section.

“Cyrus Chestnut defines what it means to be a versatile musician, combining gospel, pop, blues and transforming them into unmistakable jazz,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “The melodies that this talented trio create on stage take the audience on a journey through different eras of the genre, leaving everyone with a more profound understanding of Jazz.”

Adept enough to perform with Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Kathleen Battle, and Terence Blanchard, but hip enough to make the “Peanuts” album and perform songs by Elvis; Chestnut has worked with a number of top musicians as a sideman before recording his first solo CD at 30 years old. Described by The New York Times as “one of jazz’s most convincing anachronisms,” Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any niche.

Other upcoming performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include Jomama Jones in BLACK LIGHT (May 4–6, 2017, SEI Innovation Studio), A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln: Featuring Esperanza Spalding, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves (May 5, 2017, Merriam Theater), Chris Botti (May 6, 2017, Merriam Theater), and Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia: A Night in Havana (June 10, 2017, Perelman Theater).
