ERIC CARLE’S THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLARAND OTHER BELOVED STORIES COME TO LIFE ON STAGE AT
THE MERRIAM THEATER
FEBRUARY 21, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, January 12, 2016) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts welcomes the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia to the Merriam Theater Sunday, February 21 for a mesmerizing presentation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites. In this hour-long production, Mermaid Theater showcases three beloved stories as they are retold on stage through the magic of black light and whimsical puppets. This production is adapted, designed and directed by Jim Morrow, with music by Steven Naylor and narration by Gordon Pinsent.
“We are thrilled to share such a vibrant presentation of these classic childhood favorites with Philadelphia families,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “It will bring to life characters that so many generations have come to know and love, underscoring our commitment to families as we help young audiences gain an appreciation for the arts.”
Each unique performance retells the imaginative tales created by Eric Carle that have enchanted several generations. The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way to becoming a beautiful butterfly. Little Cloud, residing high up in the sky, transforms himself into various creatures including a sheep, an airplane, shark, and more in this entertaining performance. Last but not least, The Mixed-up Chameleon, bored with his predictable life of changing color, goes on an adventurous trip to the zoo where he attempts to emulate beautiful animals he sees before figuring out that he too has his own distinct and wonderful value.
Other upcoming shows in the Kimmel Center’s Family Discovery Series include Wild Kratts Live! (March 4-5), The Sound of Music (March 15-20), and Compagnia Finzi Pasca La Verità (March 13-14).
