PHILADANCO AND RENNIE HARRIS PUREMOVEMENT COME TOGETHER IN A FUSION OF HIP-HOP AND MODERN DANCE IN “STRAIGHT OUTTA PHILLY,” NOVEMBER 18–20, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, September 21, 2016) –– Two of Philadelphia’s greatest dance institutions, PHILADANCO – one of the Kimmel Center’s esteemed Resident Companies – and Rennie Harris Puremovement, will meet on stage in a program that blurs the lines between hip-hop and modern dance titled “Straight Outta Philly.” This unique collaboration will bring together two of the city’s most renowned performance groups – each with a distinct style – for a program that will include a story about Philadelphia featuring new choreography by Rennie Harris. The program will run at the Perelman Theater, Friday November 18 through Sunday, November 20.

“This incredible collaboration with our beloved Resident Company PHILADANCO, and Philadelphia’s own Rennie Harris Puremovement, present an innovative interpretation of African American traditions through movement,” said Anne Ewers, President & CEO of the Kimmel Center of the Performing Arts. “This program is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for audience members to see how different forms of dance can be used to tell a story about Philadelphia and its residents.”

The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) presents the highest quality of professional dance performance and improves the skills of emerging and professional dancers and choreographers. Across the nation and around the world, PHILADANCO is celebrated for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of predominantly African American traditions in dance.

Rennie Harris Puremovement dance company works to encompass rich and diverse African-American traditions of the past, while simultaneously presenting the voice of a new generation. Rennie Harris Puremovement has continued to grow since its start in 1992, with audience numbers increasing by 35 percent each year. Puremovement aims to provide audiences with a sincere view of the essence and spirit of hip-hop, rather than the commercially exploited stereotypes often presented by the media while encouraging young dancers that share their enthusiasm for hip-hop and dance theater.

Other upcoming performances on the Kimmel Center Campus include; An American in Paris (November 22–27, 2016, Academy of Music), A Soulful Christmas(December 13, 2016, Verizon Hall), Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (February 3–4, 2017, Merriam Theater), Balé Folclórico da Bahía (February 17, 2017, Merriam Theater), and Shaping Sound: After the Curtain (March 7, 2017, Merriam Theater).
