Overview

Meet up in the Plaza for a FREE Cabaret performance featuring the Tim Brey Trio.

Tim Brey is a Philadelphia-based jazz pianist and composer. In his diverse career as a bandleader, sideman, and solo pianist, Brey has performed with Samara Joy, Renée Fleming, Terell Stafford, Houston Person, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Veronica Swift, Peter Bernstein, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Warren Wolf, Steve Wilson, Tim Warfield, Rodney Whitaker, and many more.

As a leader, Brey has released three albums to date: "Unwrap," a piano trio holiday celebration (2015), "The Things We Did Last Summer," an amalgam of several years of solo, trio, and quintet recordings (2021), and "News," which debuted in October 2022, following Brey’s expanding compositional vision for his sextet.

Brey teaches jazz piano, theory, and improvisation at the Boyer College of Music at Temple University. Outside of the university context, he continues to maintain a small private studio of dedicated musicians and pianists.

"Unwrap' is unapologetically a jazz record; improvisation, conversation, re-interpretation and all. But it's obviously a Christmas record too, and I tried to sincerely capture that spirit without compromising musicality for commercial appeal. One of the first jazz records I ever owned and fell in love with was Vince Guaraldi's, 'A Charlie Brown Christmas.' Beyond loving the songs themselves and the time of year, the record stuck with me because of how it struck this balance, and I tried to do the same thing here. There’s a long history of jazz musicians reinventing Christmas and holiday music, and some of my favorite musicians today continue to release takes on these classics. We hear these songs on the radio growing up, and they have a real nostalgia that appeals to musicians and non-musicians alike.
