KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS GRAMMY® AWARD NOMINATED POWERHOUSE JAZZ VOCALIST JAZZMEIA HORN FOR AN EVENING OF CLASSIC AND ORIGINAL MUSIC

OCTOBER 28, 2022

“Horn is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures… but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present.”
- THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Without a doubt among the jazz world’s most exciting young vocalists…her sound is explosive and bright and rich, catnip for audiences looking for boldness that’s still traditional.”

- BILLBOARD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, September 19, 2022) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus presents Grammy® Award nominee and powerhouse Jazz vocalist Jazzmeia Horn in the Campus’ Verizon Hall on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 8:00 p.m., as part of the 2022-23 Jazz Series. Presented as part of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and Jazz Philadelphia Living Legacy Jazz Awards and Jazz Summit, this program will include a performance with 2022 Living Legacy Jazz Award winner Roger Humphries.

In addition to her interpretation of Jazz standards, Horn’s repertoire includes songs and music from other acclaimed performers such as Stevie Wonder, presented in a style compared to iconic Jazz vocalists such as Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson.

“Philadelphia is a city that celebrates Jazz in its many forms, supporting new stars as much as legendary talents,” said Frances Egler, Senior Director of Programming and Presentations on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. “With her explosive sound and presence, the multi-talented Jazzmeia Horn brings traditional Jazz music into the contemporary space with ease and conviction. With Horn and Humphries, audiences will be treated to a superb one-night-only performance.”

Since releasing her Grammy® Award nominated album A Social Call in 2017, Horn has been busy on the road, writing songs of personal relevance and social message, perfecting a fearless approach to improvisation and performance.

Horn garnered an additional Grammy® Award nomination for her second album released in 2019. Love and Liberation is filled with songs of daring musicality, emotional power, and messages of immediate relevancy. Musically, Horn’s original compositions and covers both breathe and bend Jazz tradition, with tasteful touches of R&B and hip-hop, revealing a marked inventiveness and a love for a good melodic line that hints at what Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Abbey Lincoln, or Nina Simone would have evolved into today. The Love and Liberation album won the 51st Annual (2020) NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album.

Blessed with a fitting name for her chosen path – it was Horn’s jazz-loving, piano-playing grandmother who chose “Jazzmeia” – the singer was born in Dallas in 1991, grew up in a tightly knit, church-going family filled with musical talent and began singing as a toddler.

She attended Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts – known for launching such musical greats as Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, and Erykah Badu – then later attended The New School in New York City. Her education included steering herself to the mentors who would guide her passion for jazz, like Bobby McFerrin, Abbey Lincoln, and Betty Carter.

Winner of the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition and the 2015 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition, Jazzmeia was signed to Concord Records and released her debut album A Social Call to great critical acclaim. Now, Horn looks forward to sharing more of her own original compositions on Love and Liberation, saying, “Boy, do I have something in store for you!”

The Kimmel Cultural Campus’ 22-23 Jazz Series includes: American Patchwork Quartet (October 22, 2022, Perelman Theater), Pink Martini and The Philadelphia Orchestra featuring China Forbes(November 3, 2022, Verizon Hall), Preservation Hall Jazz Band (November 11, 2022, Miller Theater), and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and special guest Naseer Shamma(January 22, 2023, Academy of Music), Gregory Porter (February 16, 2023, Academy of Music); David Sánchez (February 18, 2023, Perelman Theater), Ranky Tanky with Ms. Lisa Fischer (March 11, 2023, Miller Theater), Immanuel Wilkins (April 6, 2023, Perelman Theater), Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour (April 8, 2023, Verizon Hall), and George Benson (May 20, 2023, Academy of Music).
