KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS 13-TIME GRAMMY NOMINATED MUSICIAN AND  ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER, JOHN MELLENCAMP: LIVE AND IN PERSONJUNE 3, 2023

Mellencamp is among our greatest living songwriters.” – Johnny Cash

“The GRAMMY-winning, Songwriters Hall of Famer, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, painter, father, and humanitarian, needs no introduction.” – Grammy.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 27, 2023) –– The Kimmel Cultural Campus, in association with AEG Presents and Turner Classic Movies, presents rock icon and award-winning musician, John Mellencamp: Live and In Person on his North American tour at the Miller Theater on June 3, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Mellencamp continues his journey as the walking embodiment of rock icon; passionate, plain-spoken, and a self-proclaimed rebel.

A rock icon, Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s with a string of Top 10 singles beginning with 1982’s "Hurts So Good" and followed by "Jack & Diane," "Crumblin' Down," "Pink Houses," "Lonely Ol' Night," "Small Town," "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.," "Paper in Fire," and "Cherry Bomb".

“For decades, John Mellencamp has continued to make music and create art that speaks to all generations,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “As a singer, songwriter, artist, humanitarian, and rock icon, he has helped to define the American songbook.”

After falling in love with music at an early age, Mellencamp was performing in local bars and fronting a soul band by the time he was 14 years old. He launched his professional career in 1976 with his first album, The Chestnut Street Incident. He has since accumulated 22 Top 40 hits in the United States since 1982.

In 2008, Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by icon and longtime friend, Billy Joel, and later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2019, WhyHunger, a non-profit organization working to end hunger and poverty, awarded Mellencamp with the ASCAP Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award, which shines a light on artists who have proven their commitment to better communities and social justice. In addition, he is the recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, ASCAP Foundation’s Champion Award, The Woody Guthrie Award, the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Founders Award, the top honor assigned by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.

The Good Samaritan Tour, a new live album and documentary, was released in July 2021. The documentary, which is narrated by Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey, chronicles Mellencamp’s historic free tour in 2000 when he performed on street corners and in public parks across the country.

In 2022, Legends of Rock: John Mellencamp opened at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a permanent expansion on the museum’s Legends of Rock exhibit. Museum goers can experience Mellencamp relics, like promotional photos, guitars, a studio tracking chart for “Jack & Diane” from 1981, and an oil painting by Mellencamp himself titled “Backbone (2022)”, reworked from a previous self portrait of himself in 1993.

His latest album, Strictly a One-Eyed Jack, was released in 2022 and highlights more of Mellencamp’s original songs. Another side of Mellencamp’s artistic abilities is the art of painting; throughout his career, he’s had exhibitions in LA with Miles Davis, solo exhibitions at the famous Butler Museum in Youngstown, Ohio, and several exhibits at ACA Galleries in New York City.

Other featured upcoming performances on the Kimmel Cultural Campus include Samantha Bee: Your Favorite Woman (April 29, 2023, Miller Theater), Girls Gotta Eat: Snack City Tour (May 11, 2023, Miller Theater), Sasha Velour: The Big Reveal Live Show (May 18, 2023, Perelman Theater), DC’s Reflecting Fools (May 20, 2023, Perelman Theater), and Kevin James: The Irregardless Tour (June 16, 2023, Academy of Music).
