KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS

WORLD-RENOWNED AWARD-WINNING

AUTHOR NEIL GAIMAN

MAY 12, 2022

“Gaiman is, simply put, a treasure-house of story, and we are lucky to have him.”
 -Stephen King

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (March 17, 2022) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus, in association with Innovation Arts & Entertainment, presents one of the most celebrated and best-selling authors of our time, Neil Gaiman,at the Merriam Theater on the Kimmel Cultural Campuson Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. The English author, whose popular and critically acclaimed works bend genres while reaching audiences of all ages, comes to Philadelphia for one-night-only.

“Self-described ‘feral child who was raised in libraries’, Gaiman has an innate knack for illustrating complex stories through his work,” said Frances Egler, senior director of programming and presentations on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. “And here on the Kimmel Cultural Campus, we believe learning and education are part of every phase of life. We are thrilled to host artists, like Gaiman, who embody creativity so resolutely, with a reach that extends from comics to fiction, non-fiction to film.”

“I make things up and write them down,” says Neil Gaiman, describing his art. As a child, Gaiman discovered his love of books, reading, and stories, devouring the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, James Branch Cabell, Edgar Allen Poe, Michael Moorcock, Ursula K. LeGuin, Gene Wolfe, and G.K. Chesterton.

Gaiman began his writing career in England as a journalist. His first book was a Duran Duran biography, and his second was a biography of Douglas Adams, Don’t Panic: The Official Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion. Gaiman credits librarians for fostering a life-long love of reading.

Gaiman’s books are genre works that refuse to remain true to their genre. Violent Cases (1987) was the first of many collaborations with artist Dave McKean and the graphic novel led to their series Black Orchid, published by DC Comics in 1988. His series Sandman followed, which collected many US awards in its 75 issues run, included nine Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards and three Harvey Awards. In 1991, Sandman became the first comic ever to receive a literary award, the 1991 World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story.

Many of Gaiman’s books have been developed into other media. The hit series American Gods is in its third season on the Starz network. Good Omens, an Amazon Prime series, won the 2019 Ray Bradbury Nebula Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation for the episode “Hard Times,” and the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. The Sandman is currently in development as a live-action TV series for Netflix, and in addition, Gaiman is producing a series based on Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast books. The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains is a novelette he turned into a performance piece, which was performed widely, including at Carnegie Hall.

Gaiman is the bestselling author of Neverwhere, Anansi Boys, Good Omens (with Terry Pratch- ett), Smoke and Mirrors, Fragile Things, Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Sleeper & the Spindle, Hansel and Gretel, Norse Mythology, and The View from the Cheap Seats (non-fiction essays).

He is also the author of American Gods, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Bram Stoker, and Locus awards and proclaimed one of the 125 most important books of the last 125 years by the New York Public Library. In 2020, he published The Annotated American Gods. His newest books, published in 2020, are The Neil Gaiman Reader: Selected Fiction and Pirate Stew, illustrated by Chris Riddell.
