KIMMEL CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS

MARVEL SUPERHERO SIMU LIU IN

SIMU LIU: WE WERE DREAMERS TOUR

JUNE 7, 2022

People’s Choice Award for Action Movie Star of 2021 Winner

Nominated for Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor in a Superhero Movie

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April XX, 2022) – The Kimmel Cultural Campus presents Simu Liu in the Perelman Theater on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. Part of his WE WERE DREAMERS Tour, Simu gives fans an inside look at growing up between cultures, battling stereotypes, and landing the role of a lifetime in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Joined on his book tour by special guests, Simu will share inspiring insights into how we can all become the heroes of our own life stories.

“Simu Liu’s new memoir divulges his real-life experiences battling cultural stereotypes, finding an identity, and creating a career in the arts in America,” said Frances Egler, Senior Director of Programming and Presentations on the Kimmel Cultural Campus. “We are grateful to be able to provide a platform to share his incredible journey, especially in a city like Philadelphia, a haven for immigrants and melting pot of many cultures & communities.”

In his honest, inspiring, and relatable memoir, WE WERE DREAMERS: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story, Simu chronicles his family's journey from China to the bright lights of Hollywood with razor-sharp wit and humor. Through a swath of rejection and comical mishaps, Simu's determination to carve out a path for himself leads him to not only succeed as an actor, but also to open the door to reconciling with his parents.

Simu Liu made his feature debut as the title hero in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which broke box office records on its release and became the second-highest grossing film of 2021. Liu won the People’s Choice Award for Action Movie Star of 2021 and was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor in a Superhero Movie.

Before his motion picture breakout, Liu filmed five seasons of the award-winning CBC/Netflix family sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which chronicled the lives of a Korean-Canadian family that owned a bodega in the inner city of Toronto. He recently completed production on eOne’s Arthur the King opposite Nathalie Emmanuel and Mark Wahlberg, as well as on One True Loves, the film adaptation of the bestselling romance written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. He is currently in production on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, starring alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Other featured upcoming performances on the Kimmel Cultural Campus include Hannah Gadsby: Body of Work (May 7, 2022, Miller Theater, formerly Merriam Theater), Paula Poundstone (June 17, 2022, Miller Theater, formerly Merriam Theater), and Game Grumps Live: Tournament of Champions (June 19, 2022, Miller Theater, formerly Merriam Theater).
