Musical Theater Program: Set The Stage

Musical Theater Program: Set The Stage provides 5th-7th grade students with a foundational experience with musical theater. Through this unique three-part program, students will explore theater as a medley of different art forms, all serving to Set The Stage for students to tell their own stories. With a focus on musical theater, students will learn theater basics (concepts and vocabulary, artistic disciplines, and history), engage through interactive activities, and be inspired to continue pursuing theatrical art forms in the future.

Who

This program is designed for Philadelphia area schools, 5th-7th grade students. This does not need to take place in an arts specific classroom, it can take place in any general classroom!

What

The full program includes:•In-school Pre-show workshop: We send two Teaching Artists to your class(es) to prepare your students for what they will experience when they come to the Kimmel for the Set The Stage performance. Students will be introduced to what musical theater is through interactive activities.•Trip to the Kimmel to see the Set The Stage performance: An interactive assembly-style performance featuring world-class local talent.•In-school Post-show workshop: Our Teaching Artists return to your school for a workshop where students will get to experience telling their stories through musical theater artforms. The main component of this session is a 30-minute block in which student groups explore acting, singing, or dancing, creating work around a central story or theme.•Schools can register for only the performance if they do not want to participate in the full program.

When

Pre-show workshops take place on select days February 13th – March 14th (exact dates listed in registration). Workshops are 45 minutes long.Performance dates are:

  • March 13th: 12:00-1:00pm
  • March 19th: 10:30-11:30am
  • March 19th: 12:00-1:00pm
  • March 20th: 10:30am-11:30am
  • March 20th: 12:00-1:00pm

Post-show workshops take place on select days March 21st – April 25th (exact dates listed in registration). Workshops are 45 minutes long.

Where

•Pre-show and post-show workshops will take place at your school. They can take place in a general classroom, music room, etc.•The performance is in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 300 S. Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19102.

Cost

The program is completely free! In addition, busing can be provided to Title I schools for the trip to the Kimmel Center for the performance.
