The work-in-progress performance is an opportunity for the jazz residency artist to present an early draft of their new compositions. The artist performs all the new material they’ve written during the residency for the first time before taking questions and direct feedback from the audience. This input is vital for the artist as they finish writing their project. It's a special BYOB event and tickets are free with a reservation. Can you afford not to come??
Dan Blacksberg, composer and trombonist, will explore and fuse connections between jazz, klezmer music, and Jewish and non-Jewish music from the Middle East and North Africa. “I want to dig into the continuum of sounds and people that spreads from the Middle East through Eastern Europe, and a shared history of change that resulted from bringing our cultures to this country. I want to showcase those sounds, and add to them jazz’s ability, primarily through improvisation, to tell my own story [and] explore connections between music cultures of mine like klezmer and jazz, and those from the Middle Eastern to which I am connected but still an outsider.” Joining Blacksberg in bringing this project to life is Rabbi Yosef Goldman(vocals, percussion), Nick Millevoi (electric guitar), and Chad Taylor (drums).
Audiences can expect the work to be a “musical playground” combining and juxtaposing different musical vocabularies, idioms, and cultures to create unique and exciting compositions.
