FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, July 28, 2022) –– The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Cultural Campus are delighted to announce the full 2022–2023 season lineup featuring a wide-range of programming – from performances by the GRAMMY Award–winning Philadelphia Orchestra, to the best of Broadway, beloved family productions, iconic jazz performers, and an array of comedians, musicians, and speakers.

 

“We look forward to welcoming audiences for over 2,000 events featuring the greatest artists, superb orchestral performances, Broadway blockbusters, and much more—all showcasing the power of live art,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “There is nothing like being in the house, experiencing performance live and in person to inspire joy, wonder, and deeper understanding. With such a wide range of captivating performances throughout the year, we look forward to a visionary new chapter in Philadelphia’s inspiring arts and culture scene.”

 

We celebrate the start of a new season on Saturday, September 17, with the Philadelphia Fall Arts Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featuring a diverse sampling of festival-style performances, this FREE event shines the spotlight on the rich and diverse arts and culture scene across the region. Broadway

The 2022–23 Broadway season is the biggest and most critically acclaimed yet. Presented collaboratively by the Kimmel Cultural Campus and The Shubert Organization, this season features 14 dazzling productions, including Broadway’s newest blockbusters and returning fan favorites, with a combined 49 Tony Awards®and 46 Drama DeskTM Awards. With a wide range of stories, the lineup covers the best of contemporary theater with the newest award-winning shows to come out of New York, plus returning classics and several Philadelphia premieres.

 

The 2022–23 Broadway series includes: Annie (October 11 – 16, 2022); Les Misérables (November 2 – 13, 2022); TINA – The Tina Turner Musical (November 22 – December 4, 2022); Blue Man Group (December 27 – 31, 2022); Jagged Little Pill (January 3 – 15, 2023);  A Soldier’s Play (January 24 – February 5, 2023); Come From Away (February 7 – 12, 2023); 1776 (February 14 – 19, 2023); CATS (March 14 – 19, 2023); SIX (March 21 – April 9, 2023); Jesus Christ Superstar (May 2 – 7, 2023); Beetlejuice (May 30 – June 11, 2023); Moulin Rouge! The Musical (July 5 – 30, 2023); and Disney’s The Lion King (August 16 – September 10, 2023).

 

Broadway productions take place at the Kimmel Cultural Campus’ Academy of Music and Miller Theater (formerly Merriam Theater) on Broad Street, as well as The Shubert Organization’s Forrest Theatre on Walnut Street. 

 

The Philadelphia Orchestra

The Grammy-winning Philadelphia Orchestra returns with the 2022–23 Season: TRANSFORMATION. Influenced by time, humanity, and progress, the season – Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s 11th – reflects a reborn institution and a collaborative artistic vision. The season opens with Lang Lang (September 28) performing Saint-Saëns’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and contemporary ballet company BalletX making its Philadelphia Orchestra debut in choreographer Tiler Peck’s setting of Valerie Coleman’s Umoja, Anthem for Unity (which the Orchestra commissioned and premiered in 2019). The lineup places women artists at the forefront, with Hilary Purrington’s Words for Departure, commissioned by the Orchestra(October 20 – 23, 2022); Nina Young’s Traces for violin and orchestra with violinist Jennifer Koh, a world premiere Orchestra co-commission (November 17 – 19, 2022); and Xi Wang’s Ensō, another world premiere Orchestra commission (December 8 – 10, 2022), among others. The exploration of Florence Price’s work continues, with Nézet-Séguin leading her Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with Randall Goosby (October 6 – 9, 2022); while Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday will be marked by a special celebration highlighting his relationship with The Philadelphia Orchestra, with Yuja Wang onsite for two weeks of performances featuring the composer’s four piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (January 26 – 27 and February 4 – 5, 2023). World-renowned pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Leonidas Kavakos, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma unite to perform an evening of Beethoven trios in Beethoven for Three (March 18, 2023). Other highlights include the return of the film series, Family Concerts – including Who Is Florence Price? – as well as the continuation of Our City, Your Orchestra – collaborations within the diverse communities of Philadelphia – plus the HEARTogether podcast, conversations on social justice, creative equity, and the musical world.

 

Family Discovery Series

The 2022–23 Family Discovery Series returns for its 7th year with a lineup including kid-friendly favorites and re-envisioned family classics, curated to appeal to the littlest growing arts lovers. Jazz Series

The 2022–23 Kimmel Cultural Campus Jazz series features critically acclaimed musicians and culturally innovative masters of their craft. This year’s lineup celebrates the immigrant soul of American roots music, commemorates the history of jazz, and showcases the evolution of jazz from the genre’s legendary origins in Philadelphia to groundbreaking new artists who pioneer jazz music for future generations.

 

The 2022–23 Jazz Season includes: American Patchwork Quartet (October 22, 2022); Pink Martini and The Philadelphia Orchestra featuring China Forbes (November 3, 2022); Preservation Hall Jazz Band (November 11, 2022); Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and Special Guest Naseer Shamma (January 22, 2023); Gregory Porter (February 16, 2023); David Sánchez (February 18, 2023); Ranky Tanky with Ms. Lisa Fischer (March 11, 2023); Immanuel Wilkins (April 6, 2023); Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour (April 8, 2023); and George Benson (May 20, 2023).
