FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, February 11, 2020) – Back-by-popular-demand, the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus presents Cantor David F. Tilman, local synagogues, and community choirs as Tilman leads an evening of Jewish music in the third annual Sing Hallelujah concert at Verizon Hall on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 8:00 p.m.
This year’s program, Broadway: A Jewish Legacy, celebrates the many Jewish composers and lyricists who have written for the American stage and fundamentally shaped the modern musical as we know it today. For one-night-only, congregations from across Pennsylvania and New Jersey will come together, as they raise their voices in harmony, letting music be the force that brings Jewish communities together. This program will feature 10 area cantor soloists, as well as an ensemble of over 200 singers.
“This special program, now in its third year, unites regional synagogues and enables Jewish and non-Jewish Philadelphians to experience these vocalists in a unique format,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “This year’s performance honors the immense impact Jewish artists have had on the American musical theater songbook. Without these iconic visionaries, acclaimed shows like An American in Paris, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, and Wicked, among many others, would not exist.”
This year’s performance will feature a special guest presentation from cast members of Broadway’s Yiddish revival of Fiddler on the Roof: Steven Skybell (Tevye) and Jennifer Babiak (Golde). Both cast members will be featured singing selections from the show with local choirs.
Embracing a theme of Jewish voices for the stage, the evening will feature the music of luminary songwriters such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Sheldon Harnick, Stephen Schwartz, and Leonard Bernstein. The concert will also give a special tribute to the glorious contributions of Stephen Sondheim in celebration of his 90th birthday.
Sing Hallelujah will be led by music director and conductor Cantor David F. Tilman. Cantor Tilman, a graduate of Columbia College, Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Juilliard School, is Cantor Emeritus of Beth Sholom Congregation and choir director of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel of Elkins Park.
